20140716_0939261 Moreland Council TSI Flag Rising

Thursday 31 July 2014

Hey you Mob,

We had a fantastic turn out at the very first Torres Strait Islander Flag Raising Ceremony with Moreland City Council during NAIDOC 2014.

We engaged the Coburg Primary School next door and Uncle Phil taught the kids islan dances and songs and hand crafted daris (head dress) with the boys and flower lays with the girls the day before. On the day, the kids (photo attached) were baking Golden Angels and dampers and scraping coconuts in the school kitchen with Uncle Phil. After the food preparation and rehearsal in the kitchen, we walked over and joined the flag raising celebrations.

The kids were writing letters to the Torres Strait Islander kids full of love, gratitude and understanding and thanked especially the Aboriginal and Torres Straits Islander people for caring and sharing for the future.

These kids letters alongside with gifts from Moreland City Council Mayor Cr Tapino will be send to the Torres Strait Islander Mayor Pedro Stephen at this years 2014 Winds of Zenadth Cultural Festival (9-12th September).

Big esso (thank-you) to Mayor Ct Tapinos and Petr Svoboda, Social Policy and Project Officer from Moreland City Council and Jane Hancock, Principal and Peta Domm, teacher from the Coburg Primary School.

There are articles in the latest Moreland Leader Community eNews as well as the Coburg Primary School Newsletter.

Enjoy reading! ☺

Yours in Unity.
