Bathurst200

The City of Bathurst is celebrating its bicentenary (bathurst200.com.au), the first European inland settlement in Australia. Governor Lachlan Macquarie proclaimed on 7th May 1815 the town of Bathurst while Wiradyuri people watched from the distance. As part of this years celebration the traditional custodians of this land re-affirming their camp on the bank of Wambool (Macquarie River) to celebrate their survival. Local Elder Dinawan Dyirribang (Uncle Bill) carried out a smoking ceremony, gave a moving speech and presented Cr Rush with a possum skin cloak.

The camp attracted hundreds of people looking for warmth around the camp fires, sharing of hot cuppas, fried bread and good yarns and most importantly listening to and learning from each other … Truly a new beginning of healing for all of us.

Earl Bathurst and his wife Countess Bathurst from England were among the dignitaries and spent a day with local Wiradyuri Elders visiting Wambigi Centre, Flat Rocks and Wahluu (Mount Panorama) …
